Iâll tell it as I remember it from the articles Iâve read and images Iâve seen, even though I wish I hadnât read or seen any of this. I am not the first nor will I be the last to reproduce what happened. I can tell it like this because time has gone by and the confusions and misunderstandings and the versions that existed in 1969, when for a long time they didnât know who the murderers were and why they had murdered, no longer exist for us. Three of them entered the house through the dining room window, and first came upon Voytek Frykowski, who was asleep on a sofa in the living room. âWho are you and what are you doing here?â The man answered: âI am the devil.â The women walked around the house to see how many people were there: they found Abigail Folger in one bedroom and, in the other, Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring (each one of those who were going to die must have thought at that moment that the murderers were acquaintances, because all kinds of different people had always wandered through that house unannounced). In a few minutes they had all come back to the living room; the murderers ordered them to lie facedown on the floor; Sebring, pointing at Tate, asked that they allow her to sit, since she was pregnant, and the manâs only reply was to shoot him. Then one of the women tied a rope around Sebringâs neck and, with the other end of it around Sharon Tateâs neck and Abigail Folgerâs neck, threw the rope over a beam and began to pull on it. One of the women jumped on Frykowski, who defended himself the best he could and in the struggle was stabbed several times; he ran out of the house, but the male murderer caught up to him and hit him with the butt of the revolver several times and then kicked him in the head. The other woman, meanwhile, over and over again stabbed Abigail Folger, who also managed to get outside and who would be found, wearing only a nightgown, on the manicured lawn. Sharon Tate was stabbed sixteen times. She pleaded with her murderer to let her go, to let her live, to allow her to have her baby. But her entreaties were in vain. Sharon Tate, Polanskiâs wife, died lying in the fetal position beside the sofa. The woman who killed her got a towel and used it to write, in her victimâs blood on the bottom of the front door, a single word: PIG. Then she threw the towel away and it ended up landing on Jay Sebringâs head; seeing the scene hours later, someone spoke of a sort of hood, and that gave rise to the infinite speculations about satanic sects that surrounded the investigation into the case during the following months. (Polanski had directed Rosemaryâs Baby, and that did nothing but increase the rumors; photos
